Traditional Cultural Experiences to Try in Korea: A Practical Guide

South Korea offers a wide range of cultural experiences that allow visitors to connect with wit traditions. From handson workshops to historical site visits, theres many ways to explore its customs and values in an authentic way. Below is a  list of traditional experiences and festivals that I would recommend.

1. Hanbok Experience and Royal Palace Visits

Wearing a hanbok, the traditional Korean attire, is a common cultural activity for both locals and tourists. Many hanbok rental shops are located near major palaces in Seoul and other cities. When wearing hanbok, visitors are granted free admission to the palaces.

Notable palaces in Seoul include: Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) - built in 1395, it served as the principal palace of the Joseon Dynasty and is one of Korea’s most iconic historic sites. Address: 161 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul  & Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) - this UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its Secret Garden, which reflects the harmony between architecture and natural landscape. Address: 99 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul

2. Korean Cooking and Kimchi-Making Classes

Kimchi-making is an integral part of Korean culture and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Visitors can join cooking classes that include kimchi preparation along with other traditional dishes such as bulgogi, japchae, and bibimbap.

3. Temple Stay Programs

Temple stay programs offer a unique opportunity to experience Buddhist culture through activities such as meditation, tea ceremonies, and chanting. Most programs include overnight accommodation and vegetarian meals.

Recommended temples: Jogyesa Temple (조계사) – Located in central Seoul, Beomeosa Temple (범어사) – Located in Busan, Haeinsa Temple (해인사) – A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hapcheon.

Traditional Korean tea culture emphasizes balance, simplicity, and seasonal ingredients. Tea houses and cultural centers in Seoul and other cities often provide guided tea ceremonies. Recommended areas: Insadong & Bukchon Cultural Center (occasionally)

Visitors can learn Korean calligraphy using traditional brushes or create crafts using hanji (Korean handmade paper). Examples include: Bukchon Traditional Culture Center& Jeonju Hanji Museum (possibly)

South Korea hosts several cultural festivals throughout the year that focus on traditional music, food, art, and spirituality (e.g the Lotus Lantern Festival (연등회)).
