Korean Healthcare System for Expats

South Korea offers a robust and efficient healthcare system, which is accessible to expatriates through the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Understanding the insurance process is crucial for expats to fully benefit from the medical services available.

National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)

Established as a single-payer system, the NHIS provides universal health coverage to all residents, including expatriates. The system is funded through contributions from employees, employers, and government subsidies. It covers a wide range of medical services, from primary care to specialized treatments.

Eligibility for Expats

Expatriates residing in South Korea for more than six months are required to enroll in the NHIS. Enrollment is mandatory and ensures access to comprehensive healthcare services.

  • Employed Expats: Those working for a Korean company are typically enrolled through their employer, with contributions deducted from their salary.
  • Self-Employed or Unemployed Expats: Must register directly with NHIS and handle their own contributions.

Enrollment Process

  • For Employees: The employer registers the employee and manages contribution payments.
  • For Self-Employed/Unemployed Individuals: Registration requires an in-person visit to an NHIS branch with an alien registration card (ARC), passport, and proof of income or financial status. Contributions are based on income and assets.

Benefits of NHIS

NHIS provides comprehensive coverage, including:

  • Outpatient care, hospitalization, dental services, and prescription medications
  • Preventive services such as regular health check-ups and screenings
  • Access to a wide network of hospitals and clinics across Korea
  •

Enrollment for International Students

  • D-2 Visa Holders: Automatically enrolled in NHIS upon obtaining their ARC.
  • D-4 Visa Holders: Enrollment begins six months after arrival, so alternative health insurance is necessary before then.
  • Coverage Start: Begins from the date the ARC is issued. Since ARC processing can take up to a month, private insurance is recommended during this period.

Monthly Contributions

  • For International Students: In 2021, the premium was KRW 43,490 per month, subject to annual adjustments.
  • Payment Schedule: Invoices are sent around the 10th of each month, with payments due by the 25th.
  • Payment Methods: Virtual account transfers, automatic bank deductions, NHIS website, or mobile app.

Overseas Korean Students

Those of Korean descent with foreign citizenship must submit additional documentation, such as a certificate of enrollment, to complete NHIS registration.
