Alien Registration Card (ARC) 🌍

If you're planning to stay in Korea for more than 90 days, getting your Alien Registration Card (ARC) is a must! It’s one of the most important documents you’ll need during your time here.

What is the ARC?

The Alien Registration Card (ARC) is a personal identification card for foreign nationals living in Korea for extended periods. It serves as proof of your legal status in the country, and you'll need it for things like opening a bank account, signing contracts, or even getting a phone plan.
Note: The name of this card was recently changed, so make sure you refer to it by the correct title.

When Do You Need It?

You’re required to apply for an ARC within 90 days of arriving in Korea if you're staying longer than 90 days. If you're on a student visa or a working holiday visa, the ARC is necessary for many everyday tasks, like opening a bank account or applying for jobs.

Where to Apply:
You can apply at the local immigration office in the city where you're living. For Seoul, the main office is located in Jongno, but there are also offices in other areas like Guro.

Documents Needed:

  • Passport
  • Visa (usually the one you entered Korea with)
  • Completed ARC application form
  • Passport-sized photos (usually 1-2)
  • Proof of your residential address (e.g., lease contract or rental agreement)
  • Payment (usually around 30,000 KRW)
  •

ID Photos and Editing

Now, about those ID photos... You’ll need to submit passport-sized photos when applying for your ARC.  Make sure to go to a good photo studio to get the best shots. Here are a few recommendations for studios in Seoul that do great ID photos:

  • Photo Studio Yellow – Hongdae
  • Studio W – Hongdae
  • Studio K – Seongsu

It’s definitely worth the extra effort to make sure your ARC photo isn’t a nightmare!

Processing Time

It usually takes 7-10 business days to process your ARC. Once ready, you’ll be notified, and you can pick it up at the same immigration office.

Cost

The cost for applying for an ARC is generally 30,000 KRW, and you’ll pay this when you submit your application.

Why Do You Need It?

The ARC is needed for:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Signing contracts (rent, phone, etc.)
  • Getting a phone plan
  • Applying for jobs in certain industries (e.g., teaching)
  • Registering with your university or other institutions
  • Extending your visa or making other immigration-related requests

Important Notes:

  • Keep your ARC with you at all times, as it’s a legal requirement.
  • If your ARC is lost or stolen, report it immediately to the immigration office.
  • Make sure to renew your ARC before it expires to avoid penalties.

Once you get your ARC, you’ll feel a lot more settled and official in Korea. It’s your key to being part of the system, and once you have it, many of the hurdles of life in Korea become much easier to handle!
